Orthographic mapping is the mental process proficient readers use to permanently store words for immediate, effortless retrieval. Ehri (2014) and Kilpatrick (2015) suggest that proficient readers recognize most words by sight, rarely needing to employ phonics skills. This asynchronous session will explore the three components of orthographic mapping, the relationship between orthographic mapping and phonic decoding, and ways to teach reading in light of the process.

Welcome! This self-paced course is designed to explore orthographic mapping. This is an introductory course that will provide a basic understanding. For more or additional information on any of the topics, please contact the course facilitator. Throughout the three lessons, participants will engage in readings, videos, reflections,  and multiple quiz-type activities that must be completed to finish the course and to receive CTLE credit.
