Strand 2: Questioning

Strand 2 discusses Questioning and is described as one of the strongest implications from Rosenshine’s ‘Principles of Instruction’, according to Sherrington (2019). In this strand, instructional procedures may include asking numerous questions and checking for understanding, asking for explanations from students to demonstrate their learning, checking the responses of all students, and providing systematic feedback and corrections.

In strand 2, Sherrington combines two of Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction including:

Practice #3: Ask questions

Practice #6: Check for student understanding

When learning about questioning in this session, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand the importance of asking effective questions
  • Learn possible probing questions
  • Investigate questioning strategies
  • Describe the benefits of checking for understanding
