The Not So Simple View of Reading: Introduction to the Science of Reading (Part One)

This professional learning opportunity is the first in a four-part series designed around best practices of teaching reading. This self-paced course will introduce the concept of the Science of Reading. The intent of this course is to learn about key scientifically-based reading research foundations needed to understand how reading develops. Topics include understanding reading research, cognitive psychology’s contributions to understanding the reading process, the essential components of reading instruction, and various foundational conceptual models like The Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tunmer, 1986).

Welcome! This self-paced course is designed to introduce the science of reading. As an introductory course, a brief explanation of components of the science of reading will be explored. For more information on any of the topics, please contact the course facilitator. Throughout the six lessons, participants will engage in readings, videos, reflections,  and multiple quiz-type activities that must be completed to complete the course and to receive CTLE credit.
