Q: How do we make learning stick?

A: Retrieval Practice

Based on more than 100 years of research by cognitive scientists, the most powerful and effective strategy for improving learning is retrieval practice.

“…trying (perhaps struggling) to remember something is actually a great way to ensure that the memory sticks.”

Willingham, 2014, p. 14

Within this section, we will address the following learning intentions…

  • Understand the research behind retrieval practice and the impact that it has on learning.
  • Understand the importance of practicing recall of prior knowledge and learn effective ways to activate prior knowledge.
  • Understand the importance of revisiting knowledge.
  • Learn when and how to employ clear examples of retrieval practice strategies.
